Tighwad Group, Come Join!

by BlondieWrites on January 14, 2010

Tighwad Group, Come Join!

I’ve recently been granted to take over the Tightwad group, a long time Yahoo tightwad living group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tightwad

The group’s owner had disappeared long ago, leaving the group to spammers posting yucky stuff. I have deleted a lot of messages and hopefully got rid of all the nasty ones.

We are wanting to jump start the group again, bring it back to life, to what it was intended for… tightwad tips, frugal living, budgeting, freebies, and coupons. So I am asking my readers here to join up and share their freebies, tightwad tips, frugal recipes, coupons, etc. Basically any and everything that pertains to tightwad living.

The group posts are moderated to keep the icky spam out.

So come on and join and spread the word to your friends!

Internet Coupons and Online Coupons on Ebay

by BlondieWrites on October 27, 2009

Customer hungry manufacturers and online retailers are offering Internet coupons to consumers free for printing. There are several websites that amass these coupons into clearing houses where the Internet user can browse through categories and print up savings for him on nearly all brands and all types of consumer goods. Just a quick search on any browser will bring scores of coupon offers. Some websites have mini search engines that allow the user to enter exactly what brand or type of item he is seeking and then perform a search. The website will direct him to a source for coupons on exactly this product and some websites will bring a printable coupon directly to the screen for immediate use.

With all user-friendly atmosphere Internet coupons, why are they listed on EBAY of resale by auction? Coupons are designed to be given away for free, why bid on them?

It doesn’t make sense at first glance to go to all the trouble to register, log in search and bid on a free item like an Internet coupon when it is so easy to get them in the first place. Nevertheless, there are multiple auctions for Internet coupons under the heading of “certificates”. Why bother? Is it that people are just so taken with EBAY and other auction sites and really enjoy the thrill and competition of an online auction? At this level, probably, not. It isn’t much of an auction and the competition can’t be too much of a thrill when most coupons sell for around a dollar. More likely, it is the selection of Internet coupons that is being offered on EBAY that is the cause of the appeal. These are not “cents off” manufacturers’ coupons on grocery items.

The coupons listed on EBAY are more upscale or for more expensive purchases such as computers and related products, electronics and for retailers like Gymboree. The coupons are offered for price you must haves items and they are for significant price reductions. The average coupon for sale on EBAY is for $50 of a purchase or it may be a collection of $10 off coupons at a single retailer. Other Internet coupons offered at auction are for 25 to 30% of purchases at online retailers like Office Max and Circuit City. But by far the largest category on Internet coupons on sale at EBAY is for high-end children’s products like Gymboree and Jack n Jill where devoted Internet savvy Grannies are shopping for the perfect gift. (Let’s face it, most parents settle for Target for kid’s clothes and Toys R US for playthings).

It is fairly obvious that it is worth it to the buying to take the time to bid on and purchase an Internet coupon for $50 off purchase of an item he is planning to buy. Even after paying $1 purchase price and up to $4 shipping, the consumer is going to save nearly $59. But how can such small transactions as a dollar plus fees to EBAY result in much of an income for the seller? The answer, as in most sales related things is volume. Internet coupons are offered by sellers who have lots of hundreds of these coupons.

Money Saving Last Minute Hotel Deals

by BlondieWrites on October 1, 2009

Holidays are a common time for people to travel to visit family and friends. Unfortunately, some people don’t plan ahead and scramble around looking for money-saving last minute hotel deals. Luckily the last minute deals are out there, but it helps to know where to look.

Start by deciding what you want. Do you need one hotel room for multiple people or would you prefer more than one room situated together? Are you willing to drive a little to your final destination in order to save money or do you want a hotel as close as possible to the friends or family you’re visiting? Having these questions answered can help you when you start your search.

Know what you’re willing to spend on hotel accommodations. This information will help you determine if you’re getting a good deal or not.

Go online and search for hotel deals with websites like Priceline, Hotwire, Hotel.com or similar websites. You may also want to go directly to the hotel websites to see if they have any specials listed and to check for vacancies.

Create a spreadsheet or at least write down information as you gather it so you can compare prices. Include the name of the hotel, price, and dates the rooms are available. Don’t be pressured into taking the first deal that comes along; there are others out there if you take the time to look.

Expect to get the best deals for weekends. Staying from Thursday until Monday, or Friday until Tuesday will often help you save the most money.

Maybe you don’t plan to visit family during Thanksgiving. You may be looking for an escape from your regular schedule. During Thanksgiving, some locations have very few guests and can offer great deals for those willing to spend their holiday away from family.

Call and talk with the hotel personnel where you would like to stay. You may actually find they have unadvertised deals or can offer you additional discounts. It doesn’t hurt to ask for a lower rate; the worst they can do is tell you there are none available. You may be surprised when they tell you there are other savings available.

When you arrive, don’t forget to ask if there are any other discounts you may qualify for. Do you have an AAA membership or are you in the military? These discounts can be added to the rate you’ve already been given which could bring the price of the room down even further.

If you’re visiting family for Thanksgiving Day, why not take advantage of some of the money-saving last minute hotel deals available? Checking in on Thursday night will allow you to save money because you’re considered a weekend guest which normally has a reduced rate. Enjoy your stay!

Can Discount Stores Really Offer you a Bargain?

by BlondieWrites on September 23, 2009

It seems like dollar stores and other various discount stores are becoming a common retailer in most areas. Can these discount stores really offer you a bargain or do they just sell poor quality items? In my opinion, there are plenty of gear bargains to be found in dollar stores and discount stores if you look for the right items.

I give lots of cards to people, but they can cost $3 each at most retailers. I can find some great cards at discount stores for about $.50 each. They are still funny or pretty or sentimental in nature and I never feel like I had to settle for less than what I wanted to say.

Disposable items for a party are a great deal at discount stores. The cost of napkins, paper plates, cups, silverware, invitations, and tablecloths can really add up fast. Wrapping paper and gift bags are another area of party items that can be found for a good price at discount stores.

I wouldn’t recommend going into discount stores and buying gifts for your family members or friends, but there are some good items in there. I personally enjoy buying picture frames from discount stores because they look just as nice. However, I would feel bad giving picture frames from these stores as gifts. For example I bought a very nice set of three frames from a discount store recently. They look like glass and make a beautiful display on my dresser. Yet when you pick them up you can quickly tell they are made from lightweight plastic.

Most discount stores have plenty of toys for children, but remember that children are very hard on toys. They will be very disappointed when the head pops off the doll or the tires fall of the car. I wouldn’t recommend buying such toys from a discount store as the quality just isn’t there.

Yet there are plenty of fun children’s toys you can get from a discount store including cards, marbles, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and coloring books. These all make great items for stocking stuffers or even for traveling to make the trip go by faster. I like to bring bubbles for when we stop at a rest area as an incentive to get them to treat each other with respect while we are on the road. Simple, but it works well every time!

There are also plenty of items at discount stores that you can use to decorate your home. I refuse to pay $35 for a shower curtain! It just isn’t going to happen. I always get them at the dollar store for just a couple of dollars. They last a very long time and they were well. I have not problem at all when the time comes to replace it. I have also found neat soap dishes and wall hangings for my bathroom at discount stores.

Office supplies are something most of us use on a regular basis. You can get them for a very good price at discount stores. Notebooks, paper, pens, glue, rulers, scissors, calculators, and envelopes can all be found for a really good price. I have never had any problems with the quality of such items. They are very comparable to those I buy at other retail stores for much more money.

I think when it comes to finding bargains at discount stores there are some to be found. It is important that you don’t have too high of expectations when it comes to the quality of the items. Yet in most of the cases relating the different items I have described above, the quality doesn’t have to be exceptional. They will work to serve the purpose without costing you a fortune. This makes party planning much more fun when you know you have the budget to cover it all. If you don’t shop at discount stores you are really missing out on some great bargains!
