5 Ways to Get Unique Budget Friendly Christmas Gifts

It’s Christmas again, but what will you give? Are you tired of giving the same old commercialized brand name gifts to friends and family? Are you looking for something unique and personalized to give this year? Are you like a lot of people, on a budget and trying to be creative? Here are five ways to help you get started on your quest!

1. Etsy – Etsy is a website that sells vintage items along with handmade items. There are some real artisans here. You can find everything from home goods to beautiful pieces of art and jewelry on Etsy.

It works much like eBay in that each seller has their own store. Etsy takes PayPal, which makes paying for your purchases quick and easy. And you can contact the artist or seller to ask questions. One of the wonderful things about Etsy, besides the variety of products you can purchase, is the unique nature. Many items are one of a kind items that you just cannot get anywhere else.

Additionally, there’s something satisfying about helping small business owners and artists make a living. The Etsy website is http://www.etsy.com/

2. Foodzie – If you love food or the person you’re buying for is a real foodie, consider visiting Foodzie. Much like Etsy, Foodzie is a website set up to help chefs, bakers and food artists from around the world sell their wares.

You can buy anything from kicking hot salsa to amazing cookies and baked goods. Candies, cheese, meats and just about everything under the sun is available at Foodzie. It’s a great place to try new food and to buy unique gifts at a low cost.

You may want to try the food before you give it as a gift to make sure it’s what you’re looking for. You can also read reviews posted about the sellers to help minimize risk. Like Etsy you can pay via PayPal.

Consider using Foodzie to create one of a kind gift baskets. The website is http://foodzie.com/

3. Ebay – If your recipient loves vintage, consider shopping on eBay for their holiday gift. Many of eBay’s items are auctions; however, there are also some great buy it now offers. Antiques, vintage jewelry, and even photographs and movie posters can be found online at eBay. It’s a fun place to do your holiday shopping.

4. Charities – Every year more and more charities are promoting themselves as a gift giving option. You can donate in your recipient’s name to anything from the Red Cross to buying a cow in Africa to feed a family. You can help children learn, deliver water to families in drought-ridden areas or help the homeless. It’s a kind and rewarding gift.

5. Your local gift shop – Finally, don’t forget to wander the shopping district in your own home town. Local small gift shops are jam-packed with unique gift ideas and again, it’s just plain fun to support local small business owners.

There’s no end to the unique gifts you can give to your friends and family. Check out these five ideas today and get started on what may be the best holiday yet.

Christmas Decorating on a Budget

by Frugal Simplicity

Christmas Decorating on a Budget

Believe it or not, it is that time of year again where we begin to prepare for our Christmas Holiday. This year does not have to be a stressful event if you plan ahead and utilize all resources. You do not have to spend a lot to create an enjoyable environment. The traditional Christmas complete with tree, wreath, garland, candles, ornaments and lights can become your families tradition, where all members of the family come together to partake in the event.

The tree, probably the most prominent item for the holiday, can be dressed up to suit your style. For the garland, why not try stringing popcorn together. You can use food dye to create your desired color. Or if you have younger children, make chains made out of construction paper.

As for the ornaments, take a trip into your local craft store and purchase some Styrofoam balls, pins, glue and fabric samples (which are usually placed in the front of the store) to create one-of-a-kind delights. If you do not have the time to create your own ornaments, another option would be the second-hand store near you.

For the wreath the possibilities are endless. Again, if time permits you can make your own wreath from fresh evergreens. Or simply purchase a wreath, adding on some of the leftover fabric samples for the bow and then add on simple things that can also be purchased for very little such as dried flowers, fake birds, fake snow, and throw in some pine cones from the yard.

Do not forget the candles. There is something to be said for the ambiance created from candles. They definitely bring atmosphere to the holiday. Making candles with the family can be as rewarding as the finished product. Again there are many shapes and styles of molds for the candles, and you can create your own masterpiece.

If you have a fireplace, you will want that decorated as well. At this point you probably have most of what you need from the other projects, except for some evergreen branches which can be purchased almost anywhere. You can either leave the fireplace mantle exposed or for a warmer feel, try draping a cloth over it.

Now that you and your family have created the perfect Christmas on a budget, throw a few logs on the fire, sit back and enjoy. This is one Christmas the whole family will remember.

Budgeting for the Holiday Season

by Frugal Simplicity

Budgeting for the Holiday Season

The holiday season is one of the most stressful times of the year due to the financial pressures. Between the gift giving, holiday entertaining, and the regular monthly expenses, it all adds up to an expensive time of year!

When you budget for the holidays early, you’ll have a handle on your holiday shopping and spending throughout the season.

Benefits of a Holiday Budget

Keeping a budget during the holiday season will benefit you in many ways. First, you’ll avoid overspending, which will keep you from playing “catch up” when the season ends. Second, you’ll reduce financial stress throughout the holiday season, which will make the experience more enjoyable for you.

A couple of simple budgeting practices during the next few months will have a positive impact on your holiday spending, which can help to prevent you from going overboard or becoming overwhelmed.

Try these holiday spending budget strategies to ease financial tension during this hectic season:

1. Create a budget. Determine how much money is available for you to spend based on your current financial situation. Be realistic with your holiday spending budget, regardless of how much or little you can play with. This is your spending limit, and your goal is to stay within it.

* Remember that your expenses must be less than your income. There’s no need to get into extensive debt because of the holidays.

2. Make a list. List everyone that you need to furnish a gift for so you can create a realistic plan to accommodate your gift-giving needs. Keep everyone in mind, including family members, friends, and anyone else you want to give a gift to, such as neighbors or other acquaintances.

3. Create a budget worksheet. Create a basic budget worksheet on paper or on your computer. List every gift recipient in one column. Create a column to brainstorm ideas, a column for your planned budget for each recipient and a column for how much you actually spent on each person. Track overall budget and actual spending as well to see how you do at the end.

4. Tweak as necessary. Make changes to your budget whenever you overspend on one person so you stay within your budget overall.

* Try to set realistic budget amounts for each of the recipients on your worksheet in order to minimize the need for edits to your worksheet, but do not be afraid to make edits as necessary.

5. Trim as necessary. Giving gifts to your neighbors, your children’s teachers, and service providers like the mailman is a nice sentiment, but not necessary. If your budget cannot support your list of recipients, trim the list!

* Consider giving stocking stuffer type gifts to these recipients if you insist on giving them something for the holidays. Small gifts, inexpensive homemade gifts, or simple greeting cards are just as sentimental and memorable but will not break your budget.

6. Start early. When working on a budget, starting early offers a definite advantage. The more time you have to get your shopping done, the more time you have to comparison shop, shop sales and look for deals. Avoid leaving your shopping until the last moment; otherwise you’ll likely pay higher prices and spend more time feeling aggravated in the lineups.

Get a Handle on Your Spending

It only takes a few simple changes in your spending and budgeting habits to improve your holiday shopping experience. By starting early and following a plan, you can overcome the obstacles of holiday shopping, budgeting, and spending with ease. Enjoy your holidays!
