Freebies and Coupons Group, Come Join!

by BlondieWrites on February 6, 2010

I’ve recently been granted to take over the freebies group, 1000 Quality Freebies, a long time Yahoo freebies group.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1000_Quality_Freebies

The group’s owner had disappeared long ago, leaving the group to spammers posting yucky stuff. Over the course of three to four days, we have deleted hundreds of thousands of messages (all of them!) to totally start over.

We are wanting to jump start the group again, bring it back to life, to what it was intended for… freebies and coupons. So I am asking my readers here to join up and share their freebies and coupons. Even where you found a cool freebie or what you thought about the freebie… where you find a coupon that you like, etc.

The group posts are moderated to keep the icky spam out. (There was a lot of that!!). Also group membership is moderated to keep the spammers out (or try to, at least). When joining, just say you are a reader of my frugal blog and I will approve your membership.

So come on and join and spread the word to your friends!

Medical debt plagues many households across the country and can often contribute to the terrible level of debt that many families and individuals are facing. While, medical debts can be erased with bankruptcy and other extreme measures, it’s important to take the time to exercise other options of debt management beforehand. The three main forms of debt management are debt consolidation, debt negotiation and credit counseling. In this article, we are going to focus on credit counseling and how finding the right credit counselor can help build a smart plan to pay off your medical debt and save your credit rating in the process.

Credit counseling is a great way to learn more about debt management and find a way to work with your medical creditors to find the best way to deal with your level of and specific kind of debt. Credit counselors should offer a variety of choices for you to work with your self or offer additional services that include them negotiating or working on your behalf.

Before you find a credit counselor, you need to understand your level of debt. First, make a list of all the medical debt you have and you should include the following information for each medical account: creditor, creditor contact information, interest rate, monthly payment and current balance. Second, take a deep breath and add it all up. This may be a hard number to face, but you need to be honest with your self and your credit counselor in order to face your medical debt head on and find a reasonable solution.

Once you are ready to find a credit counselor you should take the time to do some research to find a credible credit counseling company with reliable, certified credit counselors working for them. You should not be asked to pay for anything until the services have been completed, but you should have the opportunity to consult about what the fees will be so you can prepare for them at the end of the relationship. Your credit counselor should share all your options with you and give you the information to complete the tasks on your own, but also remind you they would be happy to complete them on your behalf if you are uncomfortable dealing with creditors. This is often the case with many people, so most credit counselors are trained to negotiate and deal with creditors.

Look on the website of the credit counseling companies you are most interested in and review their information and check for real customer testimonials. These are both important components when ensuring you are dealing with a credible company. Also, look for certifications, staff information and full contact information. When you are ready, set up a consultation (which should also be free) to go over your particular medical bills and hear the ideas and recommendations that credit counselor has, then you are prepared to start on your plan of action to get out from under your medical debt.

Don’t let medical debt set the stage for your future financial endeavors. Take a stand against your medical debts and find a way to stare them down while still preserving your future borrowing opportunities. Good credit is a privilege, not a right and needs to be earned with smart financial decisions and planning. Everyone makes mistakes, it’s how quickly you learn from your mistakes and the honest measures you take to correct and pay for your mistakes that show the kind of future borrower you can be. Take the time to learn from your credit counselor about how to make smart financial decisions and learn to live within your means. Creditors appreciate contact and payment, take responsibility by providing both and work with a credit counselor to put a plan into action immediately on your way to finding relief from your medical debt.

Debt Negotiation: Talk Down Your Credit Card Debt

by BlondieWrites on February 6, 2010

Credit card debt is the number one form of debt in the country and every day more and more Americans are finding themselves in deeper and deeper with credit card companies. When the payments seem high and many and the interest rates are beyond comprehension, you may be looking for relief. Debt negotiation can bring relief to the situation and allow you to fight for your hard earned money and still make your creditors happy.

Debt negotiation is a form of debt management that allows for the debtor or a representative of the debtor to negotiate the terms of the loan with the credit card company to reach a settlement amount and form a pay off or reduce the interest rate, thus bringing relief to the debtor. What this means for you is a way to pay off your credit card balance while saving a little money or by bringing relief to your monthly payments and shortening the amount of time it takes to pay off your balance by decreasing the interest rate.

The first step to successful debt negotiation is to know as much as each of your credit card accounts as possible. Pull out all the information for each account you have a make a short list of the following information for each account to have readily available when you call. You need to have the account balance, monthly payment, interest rate, creditor and full creditor contact information. Knowledge is power in this instance and the more you know about the company and how the company compares to your other accounts, the better the negotiating power you have.

While, credit counselors are trained in the art of debt negotiation and if you are absolutely unable to make the calls and negotiation yourself, you can find a credit counselor who offers debt negotiation services and have them make the calls for you. With that said, with a little courage and some confidence you can negotiate your own account and contracts with great success and a few tips.

Tip #1: The most important thing to remember when negotiating with your creditors is that you MUST be speaking with someone authorized to make changes to your account, otherwise you are wasting your time. Only certain supervisors are authorized to offer settlements and make changes to accounts and most people you talk to are only there for customer service and billing calls. Ask for a supervisor or account specialist before starting your pitch.

Tip #2: Put together some pay off money and know your back up bargaining chips. The best thing you can do is offer a pay out or settlement offer. To do this you need a lump sum that you can pay them to settle the debt if they agree. If you are unable to offer this, then you need to have the information in front of you to negotiate other conditions like a lower interest rate. For this you should have other credit card offers and accounts in front of you to offer what other companies are offering you. Many credit card companies would rather meet a lower interest rate, than lose your business.

Tip #3: Don’t take no for an answer. What this means is that if they don’t go for a settlement or pay out option, don’t give up. Instead ask for a lower interest rate or a loyalty credit to your balance. If they are resistant to lower your interest rate tell them you have other offers that you have been considering transferring your balance to that offer a lower interest rate. They will often at least match it, if not beat it. Even if your account is default, they would rather you stay with them and pay it than close the account and leave their company.

Debt negotiation can be a great tool for lowering your interest rates, monthly payments or finding a way to pay off credit card debt. These tactics can all bring success when partnered with a confident attitude and understanding of the credit card industry. With a little work and negotiation you can be well on your way to a life without credit card debt.

5 Tips for Planning an Affordable Family Vacation

by BlondieWrites on February 6, 2010

Are you ready to start planning your family’s summer vacation? In the past, this was an exciting time. However, the economy now has many Americans in a financial bind. If you are one of those Americans, planning your family vacation may no longer be as fun. In fact, it is something you may dread. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be. Although you are on a budget, there are many ways that you can plan a cheap, yet fun family vacation this summer. How?

1 – Stay Close to Home

When many of us think of summer vacations, plane rides and faraway destinations often come to mind. People like to getaway. A family from New York is likely to opt for Hawaii or Florida as their summer vacation destination. A family from Florida may opt for the Caribbean or New York City. These vacations are nice. After all, you get away and get to experience something new. Nevertheless, if you are on a budget this year, you should think closer to home. Plan a new activity each day and have a series of daylong vacations. For example, visit a state park with a natural pool and hiking trails on day one, travel to a nearby museum for day two, visit a semi-local amusement park on day three, and so forth.

2 – Let Your Children Help Choose Activities

Staying close to home is one of the best ways to save money on a summer vacation. If you plan a series of daylong vacations for the week, start close to home. Your family can sleep in their own beds each night. As you get farther away from home, book a hotel. Unfortunately, with this arrangement many parents feel like they are shortchanging their children, especially if they were used to the above mentioned faraway vacation destinations. Remember, you are operating with limited financial resources. Planning activities you can afford is more important. However, you can reduce boredom by letting your children help plan. For example, your teenage daughter can plan day two of your vacation, your ten-year-old son can help plan day three, and so forth.

3 – Give Camping a Try

If you don’t want to stay close to home, you are likely to book your airline reservations and a hotel room. Price compare to find the best deals. However, you should never pay more than $100 a night for a hotel room. This just gets too costly, especially if you are on a budget. A good and cheaper alternative is to camp. All across the country, you will find campground parks and state parks with camping accommodations. Camping rates vary greatly, but most charge no more than $25 a night!

4 – Wisely Choose Your Travel Dates

If you don’t want to stay close to home, wisely choose your travel dates. Since you are planning a summer vacation, you will find increased rates, but look at the little things. It is cheaper to vacation at the beginning or end of the summer. The middle is the most expensive. You will find higher hotel rates and fewer available rooms when there is a popular concert, sporting event, or convention in town.

5 – Don’t Wait for Last Minute Travel Deals

When it comes to finding travel deals and discounts, many mistakenly believe you should wait until the last minute. Yes, many hotels, airlines, and car rental companies offer last minute travel deals and discounts, but they are usually less common during the summer. The summer is a peak travel seasons and they rarely have problems filling planes and hotel rooms. For most, it is too risky to wait. If you are one of those individuals, plan your trip in advance, but always be on the lookout for moneysaving deals and discounts. Luckily, hotels, airlines, and car rental companies offer them all year round, not just at the last minute.

Do You Really Save Money if you Purchase Items in Bulk?

by BlondieWrites on January 30, 2010

With the continued cost of various items in our society the concept of buying in bulk is getting to be more common that ever. Yet many people question if they are really saving money or not. The answer to this question that yes you will save money when you purchase the right items in bulk. For example you really don’t need to purchase a case of 200 light bulbs as that will last you for many, many years. On the other hand if you have a fairy large family or lots of guests on a regular basis you might consider buying toilet paper and paper towels in bulk.

Any item that you will use up in a short period of time is a good candidate for being purchased in bulk. There are many membership warehouses that offer bulk items that focus on families and small businesses. Dry ingredients for your home including sugar and flour are good options. Avoid buying bulk items that will result in eating the same thing day after day though as no one wants to have to do this. For example, don’t buy snacks and potato chips in bulk because everyone in your family will quickly tire of the taste.

If you find that such items like that are a good deal but more than you reasonably need, consider buying bulk items with another family. This way you can share the items and the expense. It is good idea to take the other party shopping with you so that everyone gets a fair say in what items will be purchased. You may need to be willing to try new brands of items to make this work. If the other party already uses that brand ask them to give you a sample. If you want them to consider your brand then offer them a sample of it to try as well.

Meat is probably the best item you can buy in bulk to save money. This will likely involve investing in a freezer that can be kept in your garage or basement to store the meat in. You can purchase a whole beef, ½ a beef, or even a quarter of beef. Bulk meats of bacon and pork from pigs are also a good option. Once again you may want to consider sharing the products and the cost with a friend or relative.

Canned goods last a very long time so you can purchase them in bulk and not have to worry about them spoiling. Some good choices are soups, canned vegetables, and various sauces that you will use for cooking. Babies are quite expensive as anyone with them can attest to. Buying diapers, baby food, and baby formula in bulk are all good ways to save money on those necessities. And finally, let’s not forget about the expense relating to feeding our pets. If you use dry cat or dog food then buying it in bulk may be a good option for you.

Most people don’t change the type of laundry detergent or cleaning supplies they use very often. You can purchase these items in bulk and save plenty of money. Most of the time they will come in larger bottles that you can pour into smaller spray bottles. Make sure you have a cool dry place to store the remaining cleaning supplies that are out of the reach of children.

To ensure you are really getting a good deal on bulk items, take the time to read the information relating to the cost of the item per unit. This way you can compare that price with the overall cost. In most cases you will be able to find some really good deals that save you money. On the other hand don’t be so quick to pick up that big package of what ever you are looking at without finding out how much each item is really costing you. Manufacturers have gotten very good at selling items on concept and package designs rather than pricing.
